HISTORY
Brewster Ranch LLC is more than just a cattle operation; it’s a story of resilience, family, and vision that began in 1957 with Byron Brewster and his son, Logan. The Brewster's were no strangers to the hardships of ranch life, having experienced firsthand the devastation of the blizzards of 1949 in Lusk, Wyoming. As a former government trapper, Byron had become well-acquainted with the lands of northern Wyoming and knew that the Ten Sleep area was better suited for cattle during the harsh winters. Determined to carve out a future, Byron and his wife Maybelle, along with Logan, his wife Kathy and young son Tom, left behind their roots to establish a new legacy. They carried with them not just the grit of ranchers, but a herd of registered Herefords from Byron’s father, Charles, who had taught them the value of hard work, family, and quality cattle.

Upon arrival, they set up the ranch under the family’s Diamond J brand, a symbol that Byron first recorded and that has been family-owned ever since. This original herd, bearing the Diamond J brand, represented the beginning of Brewster Ranch LLC and the family’s commitment to quality cattle and love for the west and ranching. In the 1970s and ’80s, Tom and Logan introduced Angus bulls to their Hereford herd, creating the Black Baldy cross that quickly became the pride of the ranch. Strong, hardy, and perfectly suited to the landscape, the Black Baldys were an instant favorite, becoming a defining feature of the ranch. From that point on, Black Baldys would roam their pastures, symbolizing the successful blend of heritage and innovation.

When Byron passed away in the 1980s, Logan took on full responsibility for the ranch, with his son Tom by his side. Tom had been raised in the rhythm of ranch life, and soon he was joined by his wife, Sherry. Together, they raised three children who grew up surrounded by wide-open spaces and family values, learning the ways of the land. In the early 2000s, when Logan’s health began to decline, Tom encouraged his son Mark to attend college and gain new experiences before returning to the ranch full-time. Though Mark had always dreamed of working the ranch, he took his father’s advice and enrolled in Agriculture studies in Powell, learning valuable skills and insights. In 2003, Mark returned, bringing fresh ideas and a renewed enthusiasm for ranching that would soon prove essential.

By the time Logan passed away in 2013, Mark was already working full-time on the ranch, fully integrated into the day-to-day operations. He continued working alongside Tom, helping manage the ranch and carrying forward the traditions of hard work, family pride, and stewardship of the land. The family endured another loss in 2019 when Kathy passed, but Brewster Ranch remained strong.
In 2022, Mark married Kate, and together they brought fresh ideas and energy to the ranch. Kate shared Mark’s commitment to the ranching lifestyle, bringing her own passion, experience and expertise to the operation. Finally, in 2024, Mark and Kate purchased Tom and Sherry’s shares of the LLC, officially taking the reins of Brewster Ranch. As they took on the ranch’s ownership, Mark and Kate chose to honor their heritage by rebranding their herd under the historic Bar X Bar brand. This brand, once owned by Mark’s great-great-grandfather Charles Brewster, had been recorded in some of Wyoming’s earliest brand books.

Today, Brewster Ranch LLC stands as a testament to the strength of family, the power of vision, and the legacy of those who came before. Mark and Kate are proud to carry forward the traditions started nearly seventy years ago, honoring the values of integrity, resilience, and respect for the land while embracing the opportunities of tomorrow. With their Black Baldy cattle wearing the Bar X Bar brand, Brewster Ranch is woven with history and dedication across every acre. As they look to the future, Mark and Kate are committed to building a legacy that will endure for generations to come.
