"Hombre"
ONE HOT HOMBRE
One Hot Hombre, affectionately known as “Hombre,” is a stunning buckskin AQHA stallion owned by Rachael Calvo-Mercer. Rachael is from the Calvo Red Angus Family in Nebraska and Hombre has been their main ranch horse sire for many years. Hombre now stands at the Paintrock Angus Ranch in Hyattville, Wyoming where Rachael now resides. With his eye-catching dappled buckskin coat, striking black points, and powerful, well-muscled build, Hombre embodies both beauty and functionality.
Standing stout and athletic, he has the balanced conformation necessary for versatility in performance, ranch work, and breeding. His solid bone structure, deep chest, and strong hindquarters make him an ideal ranch horse and sire, capable of passing on strength, durability, and agility to his foals.
Hombre’s most remarkable trait, however, is his phenomenal temperament. He possesses a calm, intelligent, and willing nature that makes him a joy to work with, whether on the ranch or in the arena. His steady demeanor and eagerness to learn ensure that he excels in any situation, making him a reliable and steadfast partner.
Hombre’s pedigree is steeped in history and rich with legendary bloodlines that trace back to the foundation of the modern American Quarter Horse. His sire, Annies Little Pepper, is known for producing top-performing foals, with offspring that have earned hundreds of AQHA points and excelled in cutting and reined cow horse events. Hombre’s lineage includes iconic names like Peppy San Badger, an NCHA Hall of Fame inductee and one of the most influential sires in cutting horse history, with offspring earnings exceeding $28 million. Also in his pedigree is the legendary Doc Olena, a 1970 NCHA Futurity Champion and leading sire of NCHA money earners. Additional influential sires include Genuine Hombre, known for his versatility and multiple AQHA performance titles, Watch Joe Jack, and Pat Star Jr., both celebrated AQHA Champions. These foundation lines are featured in the AQHA Legends books and represent the best in performance, versatility, and quality.
Hombre's legacy is already taking shape through his offspring. His colts on the ground display his exceptional qualities — they are kind, smart, and eager to please, forming quick bonds with people and learning rapidly. Even at a young age, his foals are showing an impressive natural ability to work livestock. Our 2023 Hombre colt, Nacho (out of Shows Drift Snickers), has begun working goats and cattle along the fence lines, all on his own at the age of 3 months. Demonstrating sharp rollbacks, keen tracking instincts, and an intense focus, often with his ears pinned back in classic working style. It's so fun to see those instincts shine through at such a young age! Nacho’s innate talent and work ethic mirror his sire’s abilities, confirming Hombre’s potential as a producer of future ranch and performance champions.
Hombre’s combination of striking color, powerful conformation, and impeccable temperament makes him an outstanding choice for those looking to breed for ranch work, performance, or a dependable equine partner. His legendary pedigree ensures that his foals not only inherit his physical qualities but also the proven performance, intelligence, and reliability of generations past. By using Hombre on our mares, we’re not just breeding a horse — we’re continuing a legacy of excellence, versatility, and timeless quality.
