Why Our Cattle Excel:

  • High Elevation Performance:
Our cattle handle elevations of 8,000+ feet with ease. We select only bulls that PAP test well to ensure they perform in high-altitude conditions without health concerns.

  • Moderate Size & Efficiency:

    • Our cows average 1,200 pounds with a moderate frame.

    • They use fewer natural resources while maintaining body condition year-round, even in rough terrain.

    • We aim for cows that can wean calves weighing 40-50% of their body weight.

  • Maternal Strength & Independence:

    • First-calf heifers receive assistance if needed, but we calve them outside on pasture, not in the barn or in jugs.

    • After their first year, they’re expected to calve unassisted and bring home a healthy calf every year.

    • Our cows are selected for strong maternal instincts and the ability to handle calves with minimal interference.

  • Low-Input Cattle:

    • Bred for resilience, our cattle are efficient with their feed and minimal doctoring due to their robust immune systems.

    • They maintain condition on natural forage, even in challenging weather and rough landscapes.

    • We do not trim feet on our cattle; we believe in selecting for natural soundness and structural integrity, ensuring they can thrive in rough terrain without extra maintenance.

  • Good Temperament:

    • We value cattle with calm, reliable dispositions that can be managed in corrals, on horseback, or on foot without trouble.

  • Hybrid Vigor:

    • Our Black Angus-Hereford crosses produce Black Baldy calves known for their adaptability, growth, and hardiness.

Decades of Adaptive Genetics and Thoughtful Selection

At Brewster Ranch, our cattle are the result of decades of adaptive genetics, careful bull selection, and constant culling. We’ve refined our herd by choosing bulls that excel in high-elevation conditions and meet our strict standards for maternal traits, temperament, and efficiency. Every year, we evaluate our cows rigorously—only those that thrive in our tough environment and consistently produce quality calves stay in the herd. This dedication to selective breeding ensures that our cattle are hardy, low-input, and built to last.

Our commitment to continuous improvement means you’re getting cattle that embody resilience, performance, and adaptability—perfect for any operation.

Our summer pasture is in the Big Horn Mountains.

Serious Management and Record-Keeping

At Brewster Ranch, we approach management and record-keeping with the same precision and dedication as a purebred operation. Our commitment to data-driven decisions helps us continually improve our herd and ensure we’re developing the best females possible.

  • Detailed Data Collection:
We meticulously track birth weights and weaning weights on our heifers to evaluate performance and growth potential. Every calf is individually tagged at birth, allowing us to monitor their progress and lineage accurately.

  • Health and Treatment Records:
We log all vaccinations and doctorings, ensuring we have a complete health history for each animal. This helps us identify patterns, maintain herd health, and select cattle with strong immune systems and minimal input needs.

  • Informed Female Development:
Our extensive records enable us to make well-informed decisions when developing our replacement heifers. By tracking key performance indicators, we select females that are efficient, productive, and well-suited to our challenging environment.

This serious approach to management and record-keeping ensures our herd remains resilient, efficient, and built to thrive in the toughest conditions.
